"Of course. I make it a point to know everything I can about all my victims. Kirk and I have been pals for a long time. He's one of the main delivery people for my businessboth legit and illegal. Traveling salesmen are the handiest of assets. I searched him out first to keep tabs on youbut when I discovered we thought a lot alike I took him into the business with me."
"Figures. You two are made for each other."
"Thank you. Kirk has quite a few traits I admire. Namely, he hates your guts, which was something I could work on for my own needs. A little unreasonable on his part, but I'm not going to argue family business. I should have let him get rid of you years ago; God knows he wanted to badly enough. But I took pains to make sure we never crossed paths. Surprisingly, it wasn't hard to stay out of your waywe don't exactly travel in the same circles."
"Thank God," Chris muttered.
Rich's lips tightened at the insult. His voice, which had been deceptively calm, now took on an edge. "At least we didn't until you decided to invade the police station and hit on my wife. Maybe there is such a thing as fate, or predestination. We certainly seem to keep crossing paths, and always with such terrible results. It's a shame. Though I don't mind killing, I prefer to avoid it if I can. Too messyand there're always questions, questions, questions."
D.J. had remained silent, trying to follow Rich's meandering speech. She couldn't. Finally her curiosity got the better of her, and she blurted out her questions. "Rich, you've lost me. You didn't see
